Keeping Orphans In Africa Warm

My friend Tracy Jacobsen is an avid knitter. She has made some really wonderful things and she tells me it is a great stress reliever. She recently shared with me about a fairly new organization called Knit-a-Square. This organization is seeking knitters from around the world to knit just simple 8”X8” square and send them to Africa where they will be sewn together by a local church group to create blankets for the over 11.6 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. And 1.4 million in Southern Africa and that is enough to fill 3.370 jumbo jets!

I learned from Tracy that to be an orphan in Southern Africa is not only to lose the parents who would have loved and cared for you, but they will most likely forgo any type of education, will be constantly hungry and often bitterly cold. This is where the organization Knit-a- Square comes into play. They are in hopes to have knitters join forces and help them provide 10,000 blankets in 2009.

She shared with me what they actually means:
40 squares make one blanket
400 squares make 10 blankets
4,000 make 100 blankets
40,000 make 1000 blankets
400,000 makes 10,000 blankets

I urge you if you are a knitter or know a knitter send this information on to them. They can also contact Tracy at tracy@luvnlife.com. I know all the squares Tracy is personally knitting she is sending ear marked for Hotel Hope. This is a special organization that is building and refurbishing homes to help with all the tiny orphans. And you can go to http://www.knit-a-square.com/
for more information.

Or if you are not a knitter but would like to help with supplying the yarn or contributing to the postage of shipping the squares to Africa would like to contribute by helping fund the cost of the yarn or help with the postage she can give you further information.

It touches my heart to think of small babies and children being orphaned, hungry and cold. It also makes me so grateful for living here in the United States and knowing that my grand children and now my great-grand children have never had to experience such conditions.
Tracy was recently named Director of Kristin’s Kidz an organization founded in memory of Kristin Kleizo. I am sure that help and support from this organization will soon also be helping not only these orphans in South Africa but so many other children around the world.
